What better way to practice a new skill than to play a game? We love playing games. However, I must admit some times we just don’t play them as much as we should.
I’ve found the easiest area to cover in games is Maths. There are so many games out there that teach maths directly but we tend to have more fun when the games aren’t so obvious.
Maths Games

Looking over our collection, we have a couple of favourites that have been with us for awhile including Pop to the Shops, Monopoly Junior, and Multiplication Bingo: Beat the Crocodile. Each of these games have been played quite a lot when the boys were younger. More recently we purchased Magic Maths which has a wizarding theme and fit in nicely around the time we started reading Harry Potter, Tell the Time and my most recent addition, Percentages, Decimals and Fractions Bingo – which as you can guess by it’s title, is not sparking as much interest from the boys!
Following is a summary of the skills reinforced in each game. For further details about each game, click on the links below:
- Pop to the shops – handling money and giving change.
- Monopoly Junior – handling money and simple addition using Monopoly dollars.
- Multiplication Bingo: Beat the crocodile – multiplication facts up to and including 6x tables.
- Magic Maths – addition, subtraction and multiplication suitable for years 1 & 2
- Tell the Time – analogue and digital time
- Percentages, Decimals and Fractions Bingo – exactly what the title says 🙂
English Games

When I think of our games, the ones for English don’t immediately spring to mind, but as I write this I find we actually have a few games that cover English. Silly Sentence word fun by Brain Quest is probably the most obvious one and luckily it’s also one of the kids favourites, it always involves giggles! We have also played Scrabble Junior, Harry Potter Scrabble, Tell-A-Tale, Go Wild with Grammar, Story Cubes, and Figurative Language Alien Landing. We also have Make Five, Upwords, and Boggle but they don’t seem to make it to the play list very often 🙂
Science Games
So far we only have a handful of science games. I expect to buy a few more as we get deeper into the Science curriculum. So far we have:
- Dinosaur Snap – great way for Mum to learn some dinosaur names 🙂
- Periodyx – periodic table card games PLUS you can make a gigantic periodic table!
- Bird Bingo – Australian bird bingo
- Evolution, The Beginning – game of animal adaptation to ensure your species survive.
- Terraforming Mars – compete to transform Mars into a habitable planet.
