Our Maths Curriculum has both an online element and a workbook element. Up to the end of year 3 maths, we were primarily online supplementing with workbooks. From year 4 onwards we have been using workbooks as our core and using online games to make practice fun.

Online Math Programs

ABC Mathseeds

Years: Kindergarten – Year 3

For a Maths Curriculum up to the end of Year 3 we used Mathseeds as their main learning program. It is easy to monitor their progress for reporting purposes and the kids have some fun along the way!

They have Maths curriculum correlation charts so you can see exactly which lessons cover which topics for the Australian Curriculum, NSW Syllabus and the VIC Curriculum.

I like ticking things off as we complete them so I like to print out the content overview from the User Guide. It is also useful during my registration renewal visit to help demonstrate the progress we made.

They offer a 2 week trial for both ABC Mathseeds and ABC Reading Eggs if you want to give it a try. You will be helping us out too if you use my referral link 🙂

Prodigy

Prodigy Math Game

Years: Year 1 – Year 8

This is a game where the kids create and customise a wizard avatar and complete quests to earn rewards and progress through the story lines in the Prodigy world. During their quests they will encounter monsters and Boss’s (monsters that are harder to defeat!) and in order to defeat a monster or boss they must answer maths questions.

It is an adaptive game and after performing an initial diagnostic assessment it will assign work at the appropriate level. I recommend creating a Teacher account so you can assign work for them to complete that is aligned to the topics you are working on, as well as keep track of their progress.

It is also useful to setup a parent account using a separate email address so you can set goals and send them rewards for completing those goals.

The game is free BUT if they have a membership they get more rewards and can buy additional gear and accessories for their avatar. So expect to be constantly hassled for a membership!

It doesn’t teach like ABC Mathseeds does so we use it to practice math skills. Having said that, if you do get stuck the help available on the question is usually great and I’m sure we’ve all learned a few maths concepts that way 🙂

If you want to try Prodigy, you can sign up for a Teacher account using my referral link here.

Math Books

I supplement the online learning with various Math Curriculum workbooks.

Scholastic Learning Express books

Years: Kindergarten – Year 3

The Scholastic Learning Express book series are available for Preschool/ Kindergarten through to Level 3 ages 8 – 9 years old.

They usually have 2 or 3 maths books at each level and cover topics such as Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Time and Measurement, Fractions and Graphs.

My boys have enjoyed these books as they are colourful and fun looking.

I’ve usually picked these up in Aldi during their school sales, otherwise I’ve found them here at Amazon.

School Zone books

Years: Kindergarten – Year 6

My boys have also enjoyed the School Zone series of books. They are also colourful and don’t have too many questions on each page so they aren’t overwhelming.

Each grade has a Math Basics book covering a number of areas such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals etc. They also have books for specific areas such as Time, Money and Fractions as well as Multiplication and Division. These books aren’t aligned to the Australian Curriculum so you may need to add other books and resources into your plan to ensure you cover all areas required.

They can be found in a number of stores including Aldi, Kmart, Big W and Officeworks. However for the higher grades of Math Basics I’ve usually had to order them from Amazon.

Mental Maths

Years: Year 1 – Year 6

SAP Mental Mathematics

For Mental Maths, we really like the SAP Mental Mathematics books. Each page reviews a specific topic and only has 10 questions. My boys hate too much repetition which is why these books are perfect for us!

According to the 5 Senses website, each book is aimed at 2 year levels. For example, Book 1 is aimed at Year 1 & Year 2, whilst Book 2 is aimed at Year 2 & Year 3.

SAP Mental Mathematics books are available from 5 Senses Education
